Silicone Gaskets for Aviation and Marine Service: A Material-Selection Framework

In aviation and marine work, a gasket is not selected because it looks right on a sample board. It is selected because its compound, geometry, compression behaviour and qualification pathway are appropriate for the real service environment. The consequences of overlooking that distinction can include leakage, loss of resilience, premature replacement, incompatible fluid exposure or a qualification issue at a late stage.

 

Berzelius lists silicone rubber products, fluorosilicone products and aircraft trim seals within its performance-material range.2 The practical question for a project team is how to translate a demanding application into a clear material and product brief.

 

Begin with the service envelope

The service envelope should be documented before a material is chosen. It includes the temperature range, internal and external media, pressure or vacuum, static or dynamic movement, vibration, expected compression, UV/weather exposure, salt-laden atmosphere, cleaning procedures, fire/smoke requirements where applicable, and the regulatory or customer-specific approval route.

 

Service question

Why it matters to the gasket decision

What temperatures occur in service and during transient events?

A material may behave differently during cold starts, sustained heat and thermal cycling.

Which fluids or vapours can contact the seal?

Fuel, oil, hydraulic media, solvents, sea water and cleaning products are material-selection inputs.

Is the seal static, opening/closing, or exposed to vibration?

Geometry and compression behaviour depend on the actual motion and loading.

Is the environment exposed, enclosed or salt-laden?

Weathering, corrosion of mating hardware and ingress conditions should be reviewed together.

What approval, traceability or documentation is required?

The required standard and test plan must be identified before material release.

Silicone: strong capability, but not a universal answer

Berzelius describes silicone rubber as offering wide-temperature flexibility, weatherability and electrical-insulation properties.2 These attributes can make silicone attractive in suitable sealing, profile and protective applications. However, its own product guidance also cautions against silicone where high tear/cut resistance, abrasion resistance or resistance to oil, gasoline, alkalis, acids and solvents is required.2

 

That limitation is central to responsible content for the aviation and marine sectors. It would be inaccurate to present standard silicone as automatically suitable wherever fuels, lubricants or harsh process fluids are present. The compound must follow the media.

 

When fluorosilicone should enter the discussion

Fluorosilicone is commonly considered when the application combines silicone-like temperature and weathering characteristics with a need for better resistance to fuels, oils and hydrocarbons. A specialist sealing reference identifies fluorosilicone as a material used for demanding chemical exposure and lists fuel and oil system sealing among typical aerospace applications.4

 

That does not itself qualify a component for an aircraft, vessel or specific system. It does establish the appropriate decision point: where the service media includes fuels or oils, ask whether fluorosilicone—and the particular compound, geometry and test route—should be evaluated rather than assuming ordinary silicone is suitable.4

 

Aviation: qualification and traceability are part of the requirement

Aviation use raises the standard of evidence. Product form, compound identification, batch traceability, dimensional control, flammability/smoke requirements where relevant, customer specifications and installation instructions should be defined before a component is presented as ready for aerospace use. “Aviation application” is a demanding service description, not an automatic approval claim.

 

For trim seals, access panels, environmental seals and similar applications, the project team should clarify temperature, media, pressure differential, mating materials, compression set requirements, fire performance, vibration profile and approved documentation route. Berzelius can then help establish whether a silicone or fluorosilicone product direction is technically worth developing.

 

Marine: think beyond water exposure

Marine service is more than splash resistance. Consider temperature cycling, UV exposure, salt-laden air, engine-room or machinery-space fluids, deck chemicals, vibration, corrosion at metallic interfaces and the difficulty of replacement once the vessel is in service. The gasket and its mating surfaces should be reviewed as a system.

 

A simple, accessible joint may tolerate a different risk profile from a critical enclosure or an inaccessible service point. Gland geometry, fastening, surface finish, compression control and inspection interval all influence whether the chosen elastomer can perform as intended.

 

Move from material name to a testable brief

The most productive enquiry includes a cross-section or drawing, required profile or gasket dimensions, target compression, temperature range, contact media, pressure, movement, exposure environment, mating materials, expected life, quantity, installation method and all applicable standards or customer requirements. Samples and validation testing should follow the agreed specification rather than replace it.
